Tips and Suggestions
Ensuring that you develop a comprehensive plan before you start a project ensures a smooth process. Many professional designers decide ahead of time all of the details involved with the project and surrounding issues. A few things to consider are:
- Who is your target audience?
- What is your budget?
- What image do you want to portray from your project?
- Does the format match the brand of your company or service?
- How long will the piece be in circulation?
The Delivery Date
Decide on a delivery date. This gives you a deadline and a pace that define the constraints of the project. Because the entire project is driven from this delivery day, the rest of the planning process revolves around this date. Work backwards from here.
Design
Now you are ready to design your project. Develop a format, a distribution plan, and get it approved. You are well on your way to a successful completion.
Pre-Press Planning
Certain printed projects may require special planning based on how the project is manufactured. If you have a perfect bound book, for example, you must plan for the cover to extend the length of the page plus the thickness of the book and the fold of the book. And because the binding and trimming of the book happens after the piece is printed, designing the cover is critical.
Budgeting
After you have planned out the basic outline and the time constraints, making sure the project fits in your budget is crucial. Obtain an estimate, reference your requirements, and gauge your costs accordingly |
